Upgrading the humble hand soap dispenser. A mini post for a quickie project. Hand Soap Dispenser upgraded (ch0342) This is such a small, quick, fun project yet it took me so very long to get round to it. Those humble, simple super supermarket hand soap dispensers are great. Except they look so plastic-ky. Not unique. And they tend to tip over when almost empty. Most annoying. This little project will cure all that. It is such a simple idea that I will not need to write a how-to at all. Any twine or cording, ribbon or anything you can wrap around and glue onto the surface will do. Preferably something that will not get too water logged. If you do use something like that, just finish off with a layer of diluted Mod Podge or diluted PVC craft glue to seal. (That is what I did with the brownish, organic bottle which has been covered with hemp yarn and leather cording.) And to give it weight, so that it does not tip over when bottle is almost empty, just put something heavy int

Have been meaning to make a handmade toilet roll holder for some time. So I made one last night. Of course, with me, it is always an "experiment" and lord only knows when I will get round to making the next "improved" version. But this will do ...

Apple has just released a new upgrade: Apple Yosemite OS x 10.10. Should you upgrade? Always do a quick review. You don t want to be landed in bugs and problems if you can help it. There are many reviews already on the net. I will do a very quick one and give you references in case you need more info. I have done the upgrade (after reading reviews and what not). Apple Yosemite OS X 10.10 Quick Facts you want to know Apple Yosemite no major bugs: almost all the reviews are positive (though as of today 23 Oct 2014, some complaints have started regarding how Apple Yosemite has killed my WiFi . This has not happened to me.) the download takes a LONG time. It took over 3++ hours for me. the install may not be automatic. You might have to look for the downloaded install app in your Applications folder. (I would show you but it looks like the install app automatically disappeared from the folder once the install is complete). Below, you can see that I am in the process of downloadi
My hosting provider, Exabytes is driving me crazy. Over a period of a year, the load speed and even accessibility of my sites have been slow on speed and spasmodic on accessibility. Exabytes has one of the best customer service around. They truly offer 24/7 service. I can email-contact them at any time of day or night. And they will respond within minutes to a couple of hours. And that is one of the reasons why I have been so reluctant to switch from them. The other reason is that I have not been full-on at my sites only working once in a while. So their servers poor performance has not been such a bug bear to me. But now that I have re-started working almost full time at my sites, it is getting harder and harder to deal with the very slow load times. Almost daily, I encounter database connection error , service request exceeded . I tried to give BlueHost a go but as I said in Blue Host Too Slow ; their almost one week response rate to a query just put me off completely. The ne

Do you love your bead mat? Oh yes! Do you hate your bead mat slipping as you work? Oh yes yes yes! Well, I had enough. I wanted to make a bead mat tray that would be: be non-slip capable of holding multiple bead mats thick enough that when I pin something to it, there is enough depth to hold it heavy enough that it won t lift up when I move or take pins out and as a bonus able to easily change bead mats for different coloured ones. So here is my functional DIY bead mat tray. I have tested it daily for a couple of months now and am very happy with its functionality. DIY: Bead Mat Tray ; non-slip and changeable (ch0339) How to Make Bead Mat Tray I am not sure how many photos I took along the path of this experiment. Hopefully enough to show you how easy it is to make your very own non-slip, changeable-mat bead mat tray. 1) Cut a piece of cardboard to the size of your bead mat. (Here I used the cover of a Swarovski magazine.) 2) It is best to use a plain board. I would use someth

I decided to make my own pliers stand (alternatively called pliers holder or pliers rack ). It was easier than I expected. And sturdier. How to make Sturdy, Easy Pliers Stand I have been driven nosy and crazy with my various make-do pliers stands. First it was buckets, then whatever wooden canister holder, then just plonking them into a tools bucket. But as many know, the more you have need of your tools the more specialized and plentiful they get. And in the middle of a project, to be able to lay your hands quickly on the right tool, is a heaven-sent. And then to be able to store them, visually accessible and safely that is another god sent. But pliers stands or pliers holders are not cheap. Plus, even after paying the price, they have limited capacity. (You know your collection will continue to grow despite your best restraint). So being able to make your own pliers stand easily, is a big bonus. How to Make your own Pliers Stand Easily This is a very short how-to on maki

Ah, don t turn your eyes away because I seem like a lowly and ugly pin cushion. I am only a beta version. I have been on trial for a month or so. And I have made Helena so very happy! Organised, multi-function Pin Cushion (ch0388) I am a pin cushion which: is weighted is segmented to be easily organised has anti-rust capabilities can magnetically hold small work scissors and helps sharpen needles I have been made to please. And I have and I do! Daily! Helena thinks I am quite amazing (tho she does not, as yet, appreciate my lack of good looks). The Old Pincushion Here is what the ole girl had to deal with before I came along. You should have heard some of the expletives that were uttered in the dead of night when the old, fly weight pin cushion would fly up together with the needle. Or the deadliest of squints that Helena had, trying to locate the right needle on the old, messy pincushion. old messy pin cushion The Idea Behind the Organised Pin Cushion This shows a rough draft made

I wrote (emailed via their Help Ticket system) to Blue Host on the 8th October, 2014. I finally got a response on 16th October (thank God, it was the same year). With a promise of 24/7 service at hand, getting a response over a week later is .. well Just Too Slow BlueHost!! BlueHost s promise of 24/7 Service Image Source: BlueHost.com I am in the process of looking around for a good, fast, reliable hosting company which has an established, good reputation. In the process of this search, I have been Googling hosting provider reviews for 2014. And I have also been asking the help and recommendation from my friends over at Facebook. BlueHost was one of the top companies in both respect (reviews and friends recommendation). But despite all these things, it is always good to shoot the company an email to experience personally their response rate. Sadly but truly, many a good and reliable companies of good repute can and do slide in performance and service over time. Mine has .. and

I almost signed up with eWay. I am sorry I won t be. But now that I have my current payment gateway up and running (2Checkout Excellent Service) for my ClearlyHelena store, I won t be needing another gateway. However I would recommend eWay because even though I will not be signing up with them, I did learn a number of things along the way. And I have been impressed. eWay Aussie online payment gateway Why Consider eWay? Reasons why you might want to consider eWay as your payment gateway: they have a very good reputation they are Australian owned and based. (This matters to many. It may matter to you.) they contacted me personally. Via the phone. Multiple times. Friendly and efficient service. their application process is mostly online and quite easy. During my online application process, I learnt a number of things that I had not known and/or not taken care of before: required legal pages: Store Policies that cover Payment, Shipping & Returns/Refunds And that helped me do t
A few days ago, I blogged (at ClearlyHelena.com) that I was applying for a new payment gateway because my payment gateway provider (2Checkout or 2CO) had deactivated my seller status. Due to unavoidable personal events, my store at ClearlyHelena had been inactive for many months. Hence no buying activity. But 2Checkout has been so pro-active and gave such excellent service, I now remain happily with them. 2CheckoutImage source: pctechmag.com Originally when I found out that my seller status had been de-activated and contacted 2CO, I was told that I had to fill in another application. While I had been quite satisfied with 2CO s service and performance in the past, I do remember that the application process was rather tedious. And being short on time as per normal, I didn t want to have to go through the entire process again. Having heard about eWay from a friend a long time ago, I checked them out and thought I would give them a try instead. I mentioned this fact in a short blog post
